Bart Ehrman is an atheist author who states he was a “devout and committed Christian.” He denied this faith because he couldn’t reconcile evil and suffering with God’s goodness.  He states that for most of his life he was a Christian. While in High School, Bart attended a Youth for Christ club and had what he called a born again experience. Later, Ehrman went to what he called a fundamentalist Bible college (Moody Bible Institute) to study for the ministry.  Bart claimed he could recite whole books of the New Testament from memory. He finished college at Wheaton then off to Princeton for an Master's in Divinity and a Phd in New Testament studies. After having served as a youth pastor, Bart stated that he began to lose his faith. The "Hell" of A Syrian Hospital -- a story of how rebel-held area hospitals lack medicine, experienced caregivers, safe water -- and the list goes on with horrendous results.  It's not that outsiders don't care.  The Syrian government won't let the Red Cross and others into rebel-held areas. Please understand I hate the trivialization of Hell by utilizing the term to speak of terrors, traumas and troubles in this life, thus the quotes around the word in the link to the article. There is quite a fascinating juxtaposition of Holy Week and an issue being weighed by the Supreme Court. A former IBM programmer is asking the Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act which passed by overwhelming margins in both houses of Congress in 1996 with Bill Clinton signing the act into law (incidentally, he is now against it). Arguments began in the challenge to California’s Proposition 8 which resulted in the voters putting an end to same sex marriage in the state.
