Abraham: Following God's Promise Bible Study by Logos -- a Review

Image
The study is good and thorough. It takes a group/individual th rough the events of Abraham's life from before his call in Genes is 11 to the testing of Abraham in Genesis 21 and 22 in relationship to his two sons, I s hmael and Isaac (listed here in order of birth) .  I thought it was peculiar, however, that the writers include the passage 11:27-32 but fail to mention that Terah led this journey to Haran where he died and that was the place from which Abram received his call (Gen. 12). Some features I would like to highlight:   As with the rest of the Logos software, verses can either be seen by ho vering your mouse over the blue verse text or cli cked on in order to open it in a new window, from which the user can use other Logos tools on the verse a nd /or its context.  For Log os users, th e verse s will appear in your favorite version.   The graphics within the study are great. They can be clicked in order to be made more prominent and thus easily see

The Roman Vs. the Rabbi

A dear senior citizen was angry.  She came from a generation in which you dared not speak out of line to a teacher let alone hit the instructor.  The average public school of her generation was more strict than the average Christian school today.  Part of her anger had to do with the seismic shift in American public opinion regarding gay marriage and other issues.  To this Bible teacher, patriot and godly woman, her country was not just in decline but hurdling toward an abyss. She was in the background of my mind as I prepared to give a portrait of Jesus on Good Friday.  I surfed through a Harmony of the Gospels (if you have never seen one of these, you must get one) and cut and spliced together a thorough narrative of the events of this tragic yet triumphant day.  After having studied it and considered what to present, how to present it and how to drive it home, one particular scene especially caught my eye. Jesus is standing before Pilate.  He is bruised, battered, stained with b

Same Sex Marriage on Holy Week: Why the Convergence is Good

There is quite a fascinating juxtaposition of Holy Week and an issue being weighed by the Supreme Court. A former IBM programmer is asking the Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act which passed by overwhelming margins in both houses of Congress in 1996 with Bill Clinton signing the act into law (incidentally, he is now against it). Arguments began in the challenge to California’s Proposition 8 which resulted in the voters putting an end to same sex marriage in the state. All of this is happening on the federal level while Christians worldwide are observing the events surrounding Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. There have been various reactions to this. To some, the timing is an outrage, to be sure. People are lining up on both sides of the issue and social media is aflame with arguments for and against the expansion of marital rights for same sex couples. Those who embrace Christ as their Savior are divided on the question as well. So, what is a Chr

I Give Up!

How often have you either uttered those words out loud or under your breath?   You think, “Man, I really shouldn’t feel this way!”   Yet, perhaps you are actually on to something.  No, we shouldn’t become apathetic.   Throwing up our hands, curling up into a ball and doing nothing is certainly no option to life’s struggles.   However, doesn’t Jesus want us to give up?     Before you think I’ve gone mad consider these statements from the Lord: Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.   Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.   For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV) “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” Mark 6:31 (NKJV) -           The context of Mark 6 was the disciples’ report of what they had done and taught since Jesus sent them out.   Mark recorded that there were many people coming
