Getting Back to the Basics: A Review of How to Begin the Christian Life by George Sweeting

Image
How to Begin the Christian Life by George Sweeting is billed as a book to help new believers grow in their faith. Personally, I think it goes beyond that but more on that in a moment. True to the book’s down-to-earth nature inside, the exterior is a simple design. A kneeling man is featured on top of all three sides of the cover. In the top right hand corner of the front cover is a circle with “35th anniversary revised and updated” printed inside. The book is divided into 12 chapters that deal with living the Christian life. They answer such questions as what is a Christian, how does one grow, how to pray and how to be sure of one’s salvation. Topics include the Holy Spirit, Bible study, carnality vs. spirituality, the church and finances. The last chapter is a collection of Scripture verses that Sweeting encourages the reader to memorize which he divided into topics. The uses of this book go beyond its design as a guide for the individual new believer. It can be us

A Red Line to Which Israel Will Likely Feel Compelled to Respond with Force: an Interim Deal Among Iran and World Powers

Eyes and Knees on the Middle East (Watch and pray!) God makes clear through the prophet Ezekiel that there will be an end-times coalition of nations that is huge in nature moving militarily against Israel.  Ezekiel reveals that this coalition will have a major role for Iran (called Persia in the prophecy, Iran's more ancient and long-lasting name).  The prophecy also indicates that the world will do nothing but complain about the invasion , evidently including the West in general and the United States in particular.   Only an act of God against the coalition forces arrayed against Israel will save the nation.   What we are seeing in today's headlines may be building up to the fulfillment of that prophecy.  Whether Israel strikes Iran's nuclear forces, and whether it does so successfully, will not stop this coalition and thus this prophecy from occurring.  In fact, one could argue that the lack of a strike or even the strike itself could result in such a future attack

Here are a couple of links that speak about them as well. Of the three, C.S. Lewis had the most profound impact upon my life

New Noah Movie, Love for Boring Men, N. Korean Massacre, Marriage Isn't for You, Eyes and Knees on the Middle East

Don't Be Taken in by the Noah Movie's Promotion I'm not sure how accurate his sources are on this and, like he said, how much will make the final cut. However, this depiction of Noah seems flooded with inaccuracies typical of a Hollywood which claims to use biblical scholars yet cannot seem to get right what your grade schooler knows from Sunday School. See my earlier thoughts on  The Bible:  a History Channel Series  The Real Truth about ‘Boring’ Men — and the Women who Live with Them: Redefining Boring The kind of man whose romance isn’t flashy – because love is gritty. Jesus' work on the cross targets our hearts, our core desires and motivations, and when our hearts change, our behavior changes. It's amazing to watch people who once seemed stuck in a pattern of words, choices, and behaviors start living in a new way as Christ changes their hearts. Timothy S. Super Typhoon Haiyan and the Relief Effort

Update 11/15/13: Mission Network News reports:   Bohol Island, which suffered significant damage from an earthquake three weeks ago, was further ravaged by the typhoon. Missionaries and pastors serving in the area lost everything in the quake, and the typhoon has only added to their distress. “Due to the strong earthquake, houses, church buildings, roads, and bridges were badly damaged. As a result, most of these believers were temporarily living in tents. Food, medicine, water, communication, and transportation are very hard for them to find,” said a ministry leader who works on the island. He asked for urgent help for the 25 pastors who were directly affected by both the earthquake and typhoon. In addition, he reported that there are “300-500 families from these pastors' congregations who are very much in need.” “No complaints are heard from them, for they know Jesus knows what they are going through. Still, they need our prayers for comfort,” said the ministry leader. Numerous

Israel is Israel's Only Hope Vs. an Iranian Nuke Program

Image
Please note that I am looking at this from a purely strategic point of view.  Most accurately, from a spiritual point of view, Jesus is the only hope for Israel.  And Jesus, Israel's Deliverer, will do just that at His Second Coming.  In the meantime, the spiritual warfare behind the scenes manifests itself in the following ways in the physical realm.  Let's remember to obey the Scripture:   "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:  May they prosper who love you" Psalm 122:6 (NASB). If true, this could be considered a major act of betrayal to Israel: Exclusive: Obama’s Secret Iran Détente by Eli Lake , Josh Rogin Nov 8, 2013 5:45 AM EST Long before a nuclear deal was in reach, the U.S. was quietly lifting some of the financial pressure on Iran, a Daily Beast investigation reveals. It is only limited by the will of head of the church, Jesus Christ. A small church may be relatively small in number, but it wields the power of God through the ministry of the word which the Lord has been pleased to use to accomplish the impossible since the beginning. The Lord will use you to accomplish his work not because you are right, but because you are his. You will trample the devil under foot not because of your size, but because of your Savior. Many small churches can do far more than they believe, and part of the key is to stop focusing on its siz
