Focus on the Family's Citizen Link provides these crucial details from Michael Geer of PA Family Institute:

The trouble, Geer said, started when pro-life Gov. Bob Casey, a Democrat, was succeeded by two abortion-rights supporters: Gov. Tom Ridge, a Republican, and Ed Rendell, a Democrat. Between them, they occupied the governor’s mansion for most of the years between 1995 and 2011.

“In 15 years, not a single abortion clinic was inspected by the state,” Geer told Citizen. “That was a decision made at the highest levels of the Ridge and Rendell administrations.”

The grand jury report backs Geer up. It tells of how the health department under Ridge “decided, for political reasons, to stop inspecting abortion clinics at all,” holding that “inspections would be ‘putting up a barrier to women’ seeking abortions.”

Likewise, the department’s senior counsel told the grand jury of a 1999 meeting where high-level officials refused to reinstate clinic inspections. “There was a concern that if they did these routine inspections, that they might find a lot of these facilities didn’t meet [the standards], and then there would be less abortion facilities, less access to women to have an abortion.”

Thus, repeated complaints about Gosnell went unanswered. Even when the health department learned that a woman had died at his clinic in 2009, officials refused to investigate.

It wasn’t just state officials who looked the other way. The grand jury report says “some pro-choice and women’s health groups learned from Gosnell’s patients of their frightening experiences,” but didn’t contact officials.

"Dr. Kermit Gosnell is on trial, accused of performing late-term abortions and in seven cases, delivering premature babies who were allegedly killed inside the clinic. Prosecutors have described the clinic as a 'house of horrors.'  Gosnell has pleaded not guilty and maintains he ran a medical practice that gave women and families much-needed care."  -- as reported on NBC10 Philadelphia's web pages dedicated to the trial's comprehensive coverage

Gosnell is charged with third-degree murder in Karnamaya Mongar's death.
As reported by NBC10 Philadelphia, "Prosecutors allege the 41-year-old immigrant was given a lethal dosage of anesthesia and pain killers during a 2009 abortion at Gosnell’s abortion clinic, Women’s Medical Society.  Gosnell’s staff called 911 after Mongar became unresponsive. She was taken to a nearby hospital and died the next day, according to court documents. The 71-year-old former doctor also faces first-degree murder charges in the death of seven babies."

CBS News reported:
Abortion provider Kermit Gosnell, 72, is charged with killing a 41-year-old female patient and seven babies allegedly born alive, and with performing illegal, late-term abortions at his thriving inner-city clinic. Co-defendant Eileen O'Neill, 56, of Phoenixville, is charged with billing as a doctor and participating in a corrupt organization.  Eight former employees have pleaded guilty, some to third-degree murder, and have testified this month about bizarre, often-chaotic practices at the clinic.

Washington Post Story:
Former employees of a run-down West Philadelphia abortion clinic described a chaotic and horrific workplace under the direction of a 72-year-old doctor who is facing capital murder charges in the deaths of a patient and seven babies allegedly born alive.

Grand Jury Report under District Attorney R. Seth Williams
Gruesome report including a section entitled:  "Butcher of Women."  It gives the account of a woman who had her cervix and colon torn during a procedure and how doctors had to remove half a foot of her intestines. Another woman wound up unconscious and near death after fetal parts were still left in her several days after her abortion.  Most doctors won't do late term abortions after 20 weeks due to the risks involved and after 24 weeks, it is illegal.  Yet, this didn't stop Gosnell as the bigger the baby the more money he got.  His late term abortions were done by inducing labor.  By 24 weeks, most babies induced will survive, in which case Dr. Gosnell killed the babies by sticking scissors into the back of the neck and cutting the spinal cord.  The doctor called this "ensuring fetal demise" and "snipping."  The D.A. calls it murder.

THE POLITICAL REACTION
Kirsten Powers:

"Let me state the obvious. This should be front page news. When Rush Limbaugh attacked Sandra Fluke, there was non-stop media hysteria. The venerable NBC Nightly News' Brian Williams intoned, 'A firestorm of outrage from women after a crude tirade from Rush Limbaugh,' as he teased a segment on the brouhaha. Yet, accusations of babies having their heads severed — a major human rights story if there ever was one — doesn't make the cut."

Tiffany Owens, in a World Magazine post reported the following:
"Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., led a Special Order hour before Congress to raise awareness about abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s murder trial and the mainstream media’s refusal to cover it."

THE RELIGIOUS REACTION

Kermit Gosnell and the Gospel by Russell MooreHow could this murderous doctor walk in every day to a chamber of horrors and do what he did? How could his nurses and assistants suppress the screams of these children, the spattering of blood? They do so by suppressing the conscience and walling over the embedded revelation of the justice of God. They pretend as though there will be no reckoning, no Judgment Seat, that somehow all of this can be kept secret, that they can take these secrets with them to the grave.

Christian Post story - well done, though hard-to-read 1 web page summary by Karen Gushta
A disturbing part of this already gruesome story is that after pro-life Governor Casey (Sen. Casey's father) left office and pro-choice Governor Tom Ridge was in office, the inspections of Dr. Gosnell's office stopped.

The article cites p. 12 of the Attorney General's report:

"With the change of administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials concluded that inspections would be 'putting a barrier up to women' seeking abortions. Better to leave clinics to do as they pleased, even though, as Gosnell proved, that meant both women and babies would pay."

My conclusion:
Whenever we put our own selfish desires ahead of the needs of others, we go down a very slippery and sometimes treacherous path. This story should horrify both sides of the abortion debate and give pause to the abortion on demand culture of death we live in. Babies' lives who are snuffed out in the womb are only inches away from being snuffed out outside of the womb. This kind of development is only to be expected when life is disposed of because it is unwanted and so much money can be made in getting rid of that life in the name of "a woman's right to choose." And as for the oversight of the clinic, again we see that elections have consequences and the transition from a Democratic pro-life Governor to a pro-choice Republican (who was followed by a pro-choice Democratic governor) was a contributing cause to the murder of one woman, the severe injuries to others and the murder of several babies who survived the induced labor of Dr. Gosnell's "practice."
