Children Get Their Spiritual Cues from Parents. What Are Our Children Picking Up from You and from Me?

It is true that children get their spiritual cues from their mom and dad. What are your children picking up about the value of God, Church and living for Him?  What are mine picking up from me?

Mary and Joseph made it clear that they weren't going to be Jews in name only. They were deeply religious, believing in God's purposes and following His will. It was the will of God that Jesus be born to such a woman and have as his legal, adoptive father such a man.

How are your children benefiting from having you as their parents?  In what ways are you helping to shape them toward God?  We need to be diligent and to work with purpose to see our kids grow up in the faith.  This is not something that we can delegate to Sunday School teachers, the pastor of our church and others outside of ourselves.  It is our job.

From Deuteronomy 6:

4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!  5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

20 “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies, the statutes, and the judgments which the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son: ‘We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand; 22 and the Lord showed signs and wonders before our eyes, great and severe, against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household. 23 Then He brought us out from there, that He might bring us in, to give us the land of which He swore to our fathers. 24 And the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day. 25 Then it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to observe all these commandments before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us.’

Note the importance to follow God ourselves as parents, to have God's Word to be prominent in our lives and in our homes and to capture teachable moments when our children will ask, "Why do we . . .?"

I pray that God leads you and me to be the kind of parents that would raise a new generation to fear the Lord, to walk in His ways and to see mighty things done in and through them.

They can if we take our faith seriously.  Let's do it.
